10 Questions with Max Bauer (November 2021)

This month we catch up with one of the newest members of our team, Max Bauer. Find out what his favourite Marquee courses are as well as the best place to go fishing in Quebec.

What do you do at Marquee Group?

I work on our internal finance team. I work closely with our Director of Finance, Lydia Jay. In my role I provide support to her with our monthly reporting and analysis. I’m also responsible for updating and maintaining our company forecast model, accounts receivable and invoicing, amongst other tasks.

How did you find Marquee or how did Marquee find you?

I found Marquee after I graduated from Western. I studied finance there and I graduated in the spring of 2020.

I was networking, and someone recommended that I take some Marquee courses; Building a Financial Model course was my first and then a couple of weeks later there was a job posting at Marquee so I applied and here I am! It all worked out well.

What’s the best part about working at Marquee group?

I think the best part about working at Marquee is the team. Everyone is very friendly and knowledgeable in their respective disciplines. I’m looking forward to more chances to connect with them in person in the future.

What skills are you most looking to improve upon in terms of finance and the work that you do?

Well, I’m in the very fortunate position of working at the Marquee Group as I have access to all these people with great experience, as well as access to the courses and material that we teach.

Recently, I’ve taken our Capital Structure (LBO) Modeling course, which I really enjoyed. I think the next two Marquee courses on my list to take would be Merger Modeling, and also VBA for Finance Professionals

What are some of the things you like to do when you’re not at your desk helping to operate the Marquee ship?

I’m lucky to have a couple of friends that I grew up with in my neighborhood, so I enjoy hanging out with them. We all enjoy playing hockey and ball hockey together, so try to do that whenever we can. And I’m looking forward to the winter so we can go play ice hockey.

In the summer, my dad and I usually like to go out for a couple of fishing trips.

Where’s your favourite place to go fishing?

That’s a tough question, but there’s a place we’ve gone a couple of times now that’s up in Northern Quebec that we really enjoy called Témiscaming.

What’s your favourite food?

I really like dim sum! A good place to get it is at a restaurant called Pearl Harbourfront here in Toronto.

When you’re working do you drink coffee, tea or neither?

Usually coffee. We’ve got a Nespresso, a Keurig and a drip machine, so lots of options

What’s the best place you’ve travelled to?

I think my favorite place I’ve ever been was Tokyo. The culture, food and Japanese aesthetics generally appealed to me. The trip motivated me to take a couple Japanese cultural studies classes in university. Looking forward to going back someday.
